Stop Breathing

Welding Fumes Every Day

Holding your breath and stepping back from the smoke isn’t a long-term strategy

to protect your lungs, eyes, or brain from the harmful effects of welding fumes.

Dismal_Tutor3425

6 months of speech therapy relearning how to speak after directly breathing in cadmium and iridium fumes back in 2015. I still have problems getting my mouth and brain to work together.

I joke about fumes and PAPR hoods just forcing farts into your face all the time, but they help so damn much.

You won't get a lot of first-hand experience because zinc fumes generally makes you dead within a couple of days. Ditto with perchloroethylene (brake cleaner, turns into phosgene with air and heat or arc UV).

Better-Musician-1856

I welded for 40 years... I'm breathing okay considering the amount of welding I did do but then I trained myself to not breathe while welding and step back two or three steps when possible before taking a breath. Kind of hard to do if you're doing an exceptionally long weld.

NothatEDM

Co worker ended up in the hospital for a period of time after 8hrs of cutting zinc coated sheetmetal with a plasma cuter.

I pop on a basic n95 when i do (flats). By the end of the week(realistically maybe one grindback and 10-15 flats) the mask has visibly caught a lot of dust. I can only assume that a better filtering mask/helmet on someone doing way more grinding than me would be highly beneficial.
